Network
A network can let remote knowledge islands communicate with each other in a coordinated manner. A collective intelligence that goes beyond the capabilities of the individual thus arises. The prime example for emerging phenomena within a complex system is the brain: it is the linkage of the individual nerve cells with each other that makes intelligence possible.
The Internet, the network of networks, makes it easier to coordinate decentralized, dispersed human knowledge and to make collective intelligence usable. The achievements of the Linux community and Open Source movement are the result of the constructive and targeted utilization of these possibilities.
