Emergence
(from Lat. emergere: show up, come forth, show one's self) "Emergence" is the appearance of phenomena on the macrolevel of a system that does not arise until the subsystems on the microlevel are interacting. The prime example for emerging phenomena within a complex system is the brain: it is the linkage of the individual nerve cells with each other that makes intelligence possible.
